Description
The smallmouth hake is a species of phycid hake found in the Western Atlantic, from North Carolina to Florida in the USA, including the Gulf of Mexico. It inhabits sandy or muddy bottoms at depths between 18 and 366 m. The smallmouth hake has a slender body with a small head and a small mouth, and its color varies from gray to brown. It feeds mainly on small fishes, crustaceans, and cephalopods.
