Longwing spookfish [Flagellostomias boureei]
Description
This species is found in the mesopelagic to bathypelagic parts of the ocean, from 500 to 2,000 meters deep. The Longwing spookfish has two elongated, finlike structures that are thought to function as tactile organs. Its habitat is characterized by darkness, cold temperatures, and high pressure. As a part of the family Stomiidae, it is a deep-sea fish with photophores (light-producing organs) along its body. Its diet primarily consists of other small mesopelagic organisms.
