Green Ibis [Mesembrinibis cayennensis]
Description
The Green Ibis, also known as the Cayenne Ibis, is a wading bird in the ibis family Threskiornithidae. It is the only member of the genus Mesembrinibis. This species is found in wetlands from Honduras in the north, through Central America, Trinidad, and a large part of South America. The Green Ibis is a resident breeder in lowland forests and swamps. It nests in trees and lays 2–4 eggs. It is a medium-sized species, approximately 18–20 inches long. It is mostly dark, with a glossy greenish-black body, a thick curved bill, and long legs. Its diet consists of insects, spiders, crustaceans, and small reptiles.
