Borodin's Footballfish [Himantolophus borodini]
Description
Borodin's Footballfish, also known as Himantolophus borodini, is a species of footballfish, part of the anglerfish family Himantolophidae. It is a deep-sea fish, found primarily in the Atlantic Ocean but has also been recorded in the Indian and Pacific oceans. The species is bioluminescent with a glowing lure on its head used to attract prey in the dark deep sea environment. It has a globular body, a large mouth lined with sharp, curved teeth, and a long filament on its head ending in a lure. The females can grow up to 40 cm in length, while males are much smaller and parasitic, permanently attached to the females for reproduction.
