Borodin's Footballfish [Borophryne]
Description
Borophryne is a genus within the Himantolophidae family, known as Borodin's Footballfish. These deep-sea anglerfish are recognized by their bulbous bodies, large, toothy mouths, and the bioluminescent tip at the end of a modified fin ray known as the illicium, used to lure prey. Named after the ichthyologist Nikolai Borodin, fishes in this genus inhabit the darkest zones of the ocean, employing their luminescent lure to catch unsuspecting prey. Their adaptation to deep-sea life includes a body capable of withstanding immense pressure and low light levels.
