Black Dragonfish [Idiacanthus atlanticus]

Description

The Black Dragonfish is a long, slender fish that can reach lengths of up to 40 cm in females, while males are significantly smaller and more rudimentary, often not exceeding 5 cm. This species is notable for its bioluminescent properties, with light-producing photophores lining its ventral surface which help it in hunting and communication in the deep, dark ocean environment. They are found in subtropical and temperate parts of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, often at depths of several hundred meters where light from the surface does not penetrate.
