Black Caiman [Melanosuchus niger]

Description

The Black Caiman is a large crocodilian and one of the biggest extant members of the family Alligatoridae and order Crocodylia. Native to the slow-moving rivers and lakes of Central and South America, it is a carnivorous reptile that feeds on a variety of fish, reptiles, birds and mammals. It is a nocturnal and opportunistic hunter. Its dark color makes it nearly impossible to spot in the water, especially at night. The Black Caiman is distinguishable by its dark, heavy scales and its large, broad head.
