Alligators and Caimans [Alligatoridae]
Description
Alligatoridae encompasses both alligators and caimans, found primarily in the Americas and China. These crocodilians are distinguished from the true crocodiles by their wider, U-shaped snouts and the fact that the fourth tooth of the lower jaw fits into a socket in the upper jaw, making it invisible when the mouth is closed. While primarily freshwater animals, certain species within this family, especially caimans, can be occasionally found in brackish water environments. However, they are generally less adapted to marine environments compared to true crocodiles.
