Windowpane [Zeugopterus]
Description
Zeugopterus is a genus of flatfish in the family Scophthalmidae, known commonly as the windowpane flounders. This genus is characterized by its small to medium-sized representatives, which are distinguished by their thin, nearly transparent bodies, making them somewhat difficult to spot on the sandy or muddy sea floors where they reside. These flounders are primarily found in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, including areas around the British Isles and the North Sea. Like other flatfish, members of the Zeugopterus genus are demersal, living close to the seabed, and exhibit a lifestyle suited to their camouflaged appearance, preying on small fish and invertebrates. Their unique body structure and the ability to blend into their surroundings serve as effective adaptations for both predator avoidance and hunting.
