Unicornfishes [Naso]

Description

Naso is a genus within the Acanthuridae family, known for the protruding horn-like feature on the forehead of some species, earning them the common name unicornfishes. These marine species are found in the Indo-Pacific region and are distinguished by their elongated body shapes, large sizes compared to other members of their family, and the unique horn structure present in some but not all species. They are herbivores, feeding predominantly on leafy macroalgae, and are known for their importance in controlling algal growth on coral reefs. Naso species also have sharp, retractable spines on either side of their caudal peduncle, used for defense.
