Tropical slit limpets [Fissurella]
Description
Fissurella, commonly known as keyhole limpets or volcano limpets, is a genus within the Fissurellidae family. Members of this genus are characterized by their oval to round, volcano-like shells, which possess a distinct hole or 'fissure' at the top, resembling a volcanic vent. This unique feature is not only symbolic of their name but also functions as an outlet for water flow during respiration. Fissurella species are diverse and inhabit a wide range of marine environments, from rocky intertidal zones to deeper waters, primarily in tropical and subtropical seas. They feed on algae and biofilms scraped from the substrate with their radula.
