Thaumaleus [Thaumaleus]
Description
Thaumaleus is a genus within the Monstrillidae family, characterized by its members' unique adaptations to a parasitic lifestyle. Like other monstrilloids, they do not possess a functional mouth or gut and are believed to absorb nutrients through their body. Thaumaleus species have a streamlined body conducive to a free-swimming life part of their lifecycle, before they parasitize marine invertebrates. They are found in a variety of marine habitats around the globe, playing complex roles in the ecosystem as both parasites and prey.
