Tasmanian Cave Shrimp [Koonunga]
Description
Koonunga is the sole genus within the family Koonungidae, known commonly as the Tasmanian cave shrimps. These crustaceans are characterized by their adaptation to life in subterranean freshwater systems, such as caves and aquifers. Members of this genus exhibit typical troglomorphic (cave-adapted) features including reduced pigmentation and eyesight, with some species being completely blind. They have elongated antennae which they use to navigate in the dark environments where they live. These shrimps are detritivores, feeding on organic matter found within their aquatic habitats. Their distribution is primarily focused in Tasmania, Australia, where they contribute to the biodiversity of the region's unique cave ecosystems.
