Tall Sea Pen [Umbellula]
Description
Umbellula is a genus of sea pens in the family Umbellulidae characterized by its tall, singular stalk that elevates the polyp clusters or umbels off the seabed. These sea pens are found in deep-sea environments worldwide, often anchored in soft sediments. The structure of Umbellula species includes a central axis from which feather-like polyps extend, capturing plankton and organic particles from the water column. The unique feature of this genus is the umbrella-like arrangement of polyps at the top of the stalk, which can contract into the stalk for protection. Species within this genus are known to inhabit depths ranging from 200 to over 6000 meters, showcasing a broad adaptability to deep-sea conditions.
