Surgeonfishes [Acanthurus]
Description
Acanthurus is a genus within the Acanthuridae family, commonly known as surgeonfishes, tangs, or unicornfishes. These marine fish are easily recognizable by their vibrant colors and the distinctive spines or 'scalpels' located on either side of their caudal peduncle, which are used for defense and territorial fights. They are primarily herbivorous, grazing on algae in tropical coral reefs, and play a significant role in maintaining the health of coral ecosystems. Their bodies are laterally compressed, and many species exhibit changes in coloration and pattern throughout their life stages.
