Starry Dragonfishes [Stomias]

Description

Stomias is a genus within the family Idiacanthidae, commonly referred to as starry dragonfishes. These deep-sea fishes are recognized for their slender bodies, large mouths with long, needle-like teeth, and numerous small, star-like photophores scattered across their bodies. These photophores provide Stomias species with a unique appearance reminiscent of a starry night sky. Inhabiting the mesopelagic to bathypelagic zones of the ocean, they are adapted to the dark, high-pressure environment of deep waters. Stomias species use their bioluminescent capabilities for attracting prey, communication, and potential mate recognition. The genus is noted for its adaptation to the deep-sea environment, including low metabolism rates and the ability to consume prey of various sizes.
