Shortdragonfishes [Idiacanthidae]
Description
Idiacanthidae, or shortdragonfishes, are characterized by their short, stout bodies and the presence of elongated, fang-like teeth. They have a reduced number of photophores compared to other stomiiform families, but these are often larger and located on the ventral surface, possibly used for signaling in addition to predation. Shortdragonfishes inhabit deep ocean environments worldwide, employing sit-and-wait or slow cruising strategies to capture prey.
