Sphaeronectes [Sphaeronectes]
Description
Sphaeronectes is a genus of siphonophores that includes species known for their spherical or near-spherical floats, which give them their name. These organisms are pelagic, living in the open ocean, and have a simple colony structure compared to other siphonophores. Sphaeronectes species are capable of remarkable bioluminescence and use their tentacles to capture planktonic prey. Their ability to regulate buoyancy allows them to occupy a range of depths in the ocean.
