South Georgian [Pelecanoides]

Description

Pelecanoides is a genus of small, stocky seabirds known as diving petrels. They are characterized by their short wings which they use to 'fly' underwater in pursuit of fish and squid. These birds are well adapted to their marine environment, with dense plumage that provides waterproofing and insulation, and a physiology that allows them to dive to considerable depths. Species within this genus are found in the Southern Hemisphere, particularly around subantarctic islands. Notable for their nocturnal habits on breeding grounds to avoid predators, they nest in colonies, burrowing tunnels in which they lay a single egg.
