Somniosus [Somniosus]

Description

Somniosus is a genus of sleeper sharks, which are found in cold and deep waters of the Arctic, North Atlantic, and Southern Oceans. These sharks are characterized by their large, bulky bodies, slow movements, and long lifespans. They have small dorsal fins, no anal fin, and large, oily livers that help in buoyancy. Members of this genus, such as the Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus), are among the longest-living vertebrate species known. Their diet includes fish, cephalopods, and even marine mammals.
