Sharpnose Sevengill Sharks [Pseudocarcharias]
Description
Pseudocarcharias is a genus of sharks in the family Odontaspididae, containing only one species, the sharpnose sevengill shark. This shark is notable for its slender build, sharp nose, and the presence of seven gills - a unique feature among most sharks, which typically have five gills. It inhabits deep waters in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Despite its name suggesting a relation to sevengill sharks of the family Hexanchidae, it is more closely related to the sand tiger sharks. The sharpnose sevengill shark is a pelagic species, rarely seen by humans, and feeds on a variety of deep-sea fish and cephalopods.
