Sailfin Roughshark [Centroscymnus]
Description
Centroscymnus is a genus of deep-water sharks within the family Oxynotidae, known as sailfin roughsharks. Members of this genus are characterized by their long, slender bodies and the presence of two large, sail-like dorsal fins. They inhabit deep oceanic waters and are known to dwell at depths exceeding 2,000 meters. Sailfin roughsharks are adapted to life in the abyss, with large, sensitive eyes for detecting faint light and a liver rich in squalene, which aids in buoyancy. Their diet primarily consists of small fish and invertebrates. Due to their deep habitat, little is known about their behavior and reproductive biology, making them a subject of ongoing marine research.
