Roughskin Dogfish [Scymnodon]

Description

Scymnodon is a genus within the family Somniosidae, notable for species like the roughskin dogfish. These sharks are characterized by their rough, textured skin, relatively small size, and deep-sea habitats. Found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, they prefer cold, deep waters, and are rarely seen near the surface. Scymnodon species feed on a variety of deep-sea fishes and invertebrates. Their reproductive habits are poorly understood, but like many deep-sea sharks, they are thought to have low reproductive rates, which can make them vulnerable to overfishing.
