Ridged limpets [Helcion]
Description
Helcion is a genus within the family Patellidae, distinguished by the presence of radial ridges on the surface of their shells. These ridges are thought to provide structural support, as well as aiding in the limpet's camouflage among the rocky substrates they inhabit. Like other true limpets, Helcion species are found in the intertidal zone and feed on the biofilm of algae present on rocks. Their adaptation to this high-energy environment includes a suction-like foot that secures them firmly in place against wave action.
