Rhodalia [Rhodalia]
Description
Rhodalia is a genus within the family Rhodaliidae, consisting of marine organisms known as siphonophores. Similar to other members of their family, Rhodalia species are pelagic and live in the open ocean. They are characterized by their unique structure, which is a colony of specialized zooids that together perform different functions, essentially acting as a single organism. Rhodalia species are distinguished by their more compact form compared to other siphonophores, with a prominent gas-filled float that helps in buoyancy and a series of nectophores (swimming bells) beneath. Their appearance is marked by a reddish hue, from which the genus name is derived, and they possess tentacles for capturing prey. These organisms are fascinating examples of colonial life, demonstrating complex coordination and division of labor among the zooids.
