Magelona [Magelona]
Description
Magelona, the type genus of the family Magelonidae, comprises a variety of marine polychaete worms known as shovelhead worms due to their unique head shape. These worms are primarily identified by their elongated bodies, segmented appearance, and a prominent, spatulate prostomium that resembles a shovel. Magelona species are benthic, living within the sediments of marine environments where they play a role in the ecosystem by consuming microorganisms and detritus. Their burrowing activity contributes to the aeration and mixing of the sediment.
