Leucosolenia [Leucosolenia]
Description
Leucosolenia is a genus of calcareous sponges belonging to the family Leucosoleniidae. These sponges are characterized by their simple, tube-like structure which can be solitary or form loosely connected colonies. The body is supported by a skeleton made of calcium carbonate spicules that are typically straight or slightly curved. Leucosolenia species are found in a variety of marine environments, from shallow waters to deeper zones. They filter feed by pumping water through their bodies, trapping plankton and other small particles.
