Leucosoleniidae [Leucosoleniidae]
Description
Leucosoleniidae is a family of calcareous sponges within the order Calcaronea. These sponges are characterized by their asconoid structure, which is the simplest form of sponge organization, consisting of a single tube or a system of tubes. The body wall of these sponges is relatively thin and supported by a skeleton of calcium carbonate spicules. Leucosoleniidae sponges are typically small, often less than a few centimeters in height, and are found in a variety of marine environments, from shallow waters to deeper reefs. They are filter feeders, extracting plankton and organic particles from the water.
