Largetooth Sawfish [Anoxypristis]

Description

Anoxypristis, the second genus within the family Pristidae, is known as the largetooth sawfish but contains species that are distinct from those in the Pristis genus. This genus is recognized for having a slightly shorter rostrum compared to Pristis, with fewer teeth on the edges. Largetooth sawfishes are primarily found in the Indo-West Pacific region, from the eastern coast of Africa to Australia, inhabiting coastal areas, estuaries, and freshwater environments. These sawfishes are also facing serious threats from human activities, leading to significant declines in their populations. Conservation of Anoxypristis species is crucial due to their ecological importance and the critical threats they face.
