Horse Mussels [Modiolus]

Description
Modiolus is a genus of medium to large-sized marine bivalve molluscs commonly known as horse mussels. These mussels are characterized by their elongated, somewhat triangular or oblong shells, which are thick and robust. The exterior of the shell is often sculptured with radial ribs or lines and can vary in color, but it is typically dark brown, purple, or greenish. Horse mussels are found attached to hard substrates in a variety of marine environments, from shallow waters to depths exceeding several hundred meters. They play a significant role in their ecosystems, acting as biofilters by feeding on plankton and organic particles through filter feeding. Modiolus species are also known for forming dense beds that provide habitat and protection for a wide range of other marine organisms.
