Giant Ibis [Thaumatibis]
Description
Thaumatibis gigantea, known as the Giant Ibis, is the only species within the genus Thaumatibis and is considered one of the largest ibis species. It is critically endangered, with its population confined to parts of northern Cambodia, with occasional sightings in Laos and Vietnam. The Giant Ibis prefers lowland wetlands, where it feeds on a diet of insects, small amphibians, and reptiles. It is distinguished by its large size, dark plumage with pale grayish-blue coloring, and a conspicuous downward-coupled bill. The conservation status of the Giant Ibis is critical, with habitat destruction and human disturbance being the primary threats to its survival.
