Flabelligella [Flabelligella]

Description

Flabelligella is a genus within the family Acrocirridae, distinguished by its unique body structure adapted to a burrowing lifestyle. These worms have a relatively short and stout body compared to other genera in the family. The prostomium of Flabelligella is reduced, and they have distinct, long palps that are often branched, resembling a fan. The segments of their body are equipped with bundles of bristles, or chaetae, which aid in burrowing into soft marine sediments. Flabelligella species are mostly found in mud or sandy mud environments, where they contribute to the benthic ecosystem by processing detritus.
