Elysia [Elysia]

Description

Elysia is a diverse genus of sap-sucking slugs that are part of the family Plakobranchidae. These slugs are characterized by their slender bodies, parapodia (side extensions that can fold up over the body), and vibrant colors, which can vary widely among species. Elysia species are known for their ability to perform kleptoplasty, a process where they retain chloroplasts from the algae they consume and use them to perform photosynthesis. This unique trait allows them to survive for months on the energy produced by the stolen chloroplasts. They are found in a variety of marine environments, from tropical to temperate waters.
