Dorosoma [Dorosoma]
Description
Dorosoma is a genus within the family Clupeidae, comprising species commonly referred to as gizzard shads. These fish are recognized by their laterally compressed bodies, silver coloration, and the presence of a distinctive thread-like extension on the last ray of the dorsal fin. Gizzard shads are named for their unique gizzard-like stomach that helps in grinding up their planktonic food. They are found in both fresh and marine waters of the Americas.
