Deep-sea Hagfish [Nemamyxine]

Description

Nemamyxine, often referred to as the deep-sea hagfish, includes species found in deeper marine environments than their shallow-water relatives. These hagfishes are adapted to life in the abyss, with features that enable them to navigate and feed in the darkness. Like other members of their family, they have a keen sense of smell to locate carcasses on the ocean floor, which they consume from within. Their deep-sea habitat is reflected in their physiology, including adaptations for high pressure and low light conditions.
