Cutthroat Eels [Synaphobranchus]
Description
Synaphobranchus includes deep-sea eels known for their elongated bodies and reduced pelvic fins. They inhabit the slopes of continental shelves and abyssal plains, ranging widely in depth from 500 to 4,000 meters. These eels have a distinctive appearance with a dark, often black, coloration which aids in camouflage in the deep-sea environment. Their diet primarily consists of small invertebrates and fish. The genus is notable for its adaptation to the high pressure and low light conditions of the deep sea.
