Common Thresher [Alopias]

Description

Alopias is the genus comprising the common thresher sharks, characterized by their distinctively long caudal fins which can be as long as the total body length. These sharks are found in both tropical and cold waters and are known for their unique hunting strategy, wherein they use their long tails to stun prey. Members of this genus are pelagic, often found in deep waters, and can grow to significant sizes, with some species reaching lengths of up to 6 meters. Their diet primarily consists of fish and squid. Thresher sharks are solitary creatures and are known for their occasional breaching behavior, jumping out of the water, which is thought to be related to feeding or parasite removal.
