Cistenides [Cistenides]
Description
Cistenides is a genus belonging to the Pectinariidae family, distinguished by its members’ ability to build protective tubes from particles of sand and shell. These tubes are often tapered and slightly curved, resembling an ice cream cone in shape, which gives the common name to the family. The worms have a segmented body with specialized appendages for feeding and locomotion. Cistenides species are benthic, living on or near the seafloor, where they filter-feed on detritus and plankton.
