Cetoscarus [Cetoscarus]
Description
Cetoscarus is a small genus of parrotfish that is recognized for the Bicolor Parrotfish, among others. Found primarily in the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific, these parrotfish are notable for their dramatic change in color and pattern as they transition from juveniles through the initial phase to the terminal phase. They play a significant role in the reef ecosystem by consuming algae and exposing the coral substrate, which is essential for the settlement of coral larvae.
