Arachnactis [Arachnactis]

Description

Arachnactis is the sole genus in the family Arachnactidae, which belongs to the order Actiniaria. These creatures are pelagic sea anemones, meaning they live in the open ocean rather than being attached to the sea floor. Arachnactis species are unique in their life cycle and morphology. They are known for their translucent, often bulbous bodies, with a series of tentacles that can be retracted into the body. These tentacles are equipped with cnidocytes, cells that contain stinging organelles used for capturing prey and defense. The genus is characterized by its free-floating lifestyle, with individuals often found at considerable depths. They are capable of asexual reproduction through fission as well as sexual reproduction, releasing gametes directly into the water column. Arachnactis species play a role in the pelagic food web, both as predators of smaller planktonic organisms and prey for larger marine animals.
