Oxudercidae [Oxudercidae]
Description
Oxudercidae, commonly referred to as mudskippers, is a family of gobies distinguished by their unique adaptation to live both in water and on land. Mudskippers have evolved elongated bodies and strong, muscular pectoral fins that allow them to 'walk' on mudflats and climb mangrove roots. These amphibious fish are found in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions, primarily in intertidal zones and estuaries. They are capable of breathing through their skin and the lining of their mouth and throat, which is kept moist by retaining a bubble of air over their gills. Mudskippers are omnivorous, feeding on algae, small invertebrates, and organic detritus.
