Nerites [Neritidae]
Description
Neritidae, or nerites, are a family of small to medium-sized marine, freshwater, and terrestrial snails. Marine species have thick, often brightly colored or patterned shells and inhabit a variety of environments, including rocky shores, mangroves, and coral reefs. They are known for their strong opercula, which seal off the shell opening when the animal retracts, protecting it from predators and desiccation.
