Grenadiers or Rattails [Macrouridae]
Description
Macrouridae, commonly known as grenadiers or rattails, are a family of deep-sea demersal fish. They are named for their long, tapering tails that make up the majority of their body length. These fish have large heads and eyes, and a small mouth. Grenadiers are found in all the world's oceans, usually at depths from 200 to 6,000 meters. Despite their abundance and wide distribution, they are not commonly known due to their deep-sea habitat. They play a significant role in the deep-sea ecosystems as scavengers.
