Description

Engraulidae, commonly known as anchovies, are a family of small, schooling fish that inhabit marine and freshwater environments. These fish are easily recognizable by their slender bodies, large mouths that extend behind their eyes, and a silver longitudinal stripe running down their sides. Anchovies are predominantly marine, found in shallow, temperate, and tropical seas worldwide. They feed on plankton and, in turn, serve as important forage fish for larger predators.
