Spined Pygmy Shark [Squaliolus laticaudus]
Description
The Spined Pygmy Shark is one of the smallest shark species, typically measuring up to 28 cm (11 in). It has a spindle-shaped body, with a short, rounded snout and large eyes. Its name derives from the presence of a spine in front of both of its two dorsal fins. This deep-sea species is found worldwide in tropical to temperate latitudes, usually at depths of 200–500 m (660–1,640 ft) during the day and near the surface at night. It preys on small fishes and squid.
