Reeve [Ruff philomachus pugnax]

Description
The Reeve is the female of the Ruff species. It is smaller than the male, lacks the male's extravagant breeding plumage, and has a more subdued, mottled appearance. The Reeve breeds in the same marshes and wet meadows as the male Ruff, and is also highly gregarious and migratory. Its winter grounds are similar to those of the male, and it may sometimes form large flocks. This bird is usually silent, but has a loud squawk on breeding grounds.
