Pinecone fish [Monocentris japonica]
Description
The Pinecone fish, also known as the Japanese Pinecone fish, is a species found in the tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific. The fish gets its name from its hard, rigid scales that resemble a pinecone. It has a pair of bioluminescent organs on its lower jaw that helps it to attract prey and communicate with its kind. The Pinecone fish can reach a length of up to 15 cm.
