Magellanic Woodpecker [Campephilus magellanicus]
Description
The Magellanic Woodpecker is a very large woodpecker found along the Andes of Chile and southwestern Argentina, in the far southern parts of South America. It is closely related to the powerful and crimson-crested woodpeckers, with which it forms a superspecies. This bird is primarily found in dense, often Nothofagus, southern beech forests, but can also be found in mixed or coniferous forests. They are known for their distinctive drumming sound.
