Barreleye [Coelophrys bradfordi]
Description
The Barreleye is a mesopelagic species known for its unusual transparent head and upward-facing eyes. Its common name is derived from these barrel-shaped eyes, which are enclosed within a dome of soft, transparent tissue. This unique adaptation allows the species to collect more light in its deep, dark habitat. It is found in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans at depths ranging between 600 and 800 meters. The Barreleye is a carnivorous species, feeding on small fishes and jellyfish.
