Band-rumped Storm Petrel [Oceanodroma castro]

Description

The Band-rumped Storm Petrel, or Oceanodroma castro, is a small seabird of the storm petrel family Hydrobatidae. It is a species pelagic: it spends most of its life in the open ocean, coming to land only to breed. It has predominantly dark plumage with a clearly visible white rump band, which gives it its common name. This species breeds on islands in the subtropical Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, laying a single egg in a burrow in soft soil or in crevices in rocks. These birds forage for food at night, feeding on plankton and small squids.
